Girls Hate Girls

Sun Nov 8, 2009, 12:09 AM
Just a quick question. To you females out there, why do you hate or why do you think other females hate female characters in the media? Same goes for males; why do you hate/why do you think others hate female characters in the media?

The subject matter is rather interesting, and I've always been curious as to the reasoning.

  • Mood: Stuck
  • Listening to: "Under Pressure" - Queen ft. David Bowie
  • Reading: "Tekkon Kinkreet", Taiyo Matsumoto
  • Playing: Dissidia Final Fantasy

...I usually don't. XD
I only hate them if they're ABSOLUTELY STUPID, like Tohru from Fruits Basket and Kagome from InuYasha. Sometimes Misa from Death Note ut she's just annoying.
But at least Tohru redeemed herself to me >A>

I'm going to assume girls hate them because they are in love with the male character/the male character loves them and they are simply just jealous and wish to be in their place.

I really don't get it myself >A>
There are a bunch of perfectly good Female characters in Anime that there really is no reason for another girl to hate them. Maka from Soul Eater, Yoko from Gurren Lagann...etc.

I really do think it's the whole jealousy thing.

But why are the female characters annoying? If a male character were to flaunt themselves or act in a parallel sense as the female character, would they be more or less annoying? 0:

Jealousy's always a popular choice, but to me I don't think it's not the only reasoning behind character misogyny. Female characters like Maka and Yoko are combat-oriented and tend to strive for a rather masculine role despite their appearance, but feminine characters like Nia or Misa from their respected series gain less of a favor to the female population.

Sorry for ranting at you 8'D
:iconhamstertastic:
It's not only the females o3o I addressed them because you asked to.
Cause for example Momiji and Hunny, as well as Tamaki annoy the shit out of me xD
I can't say I HATE them, but yeah. :\

they do...but that was the only reason I could think of. :\
I'm not sure really xD I like Nia just fine, a lot actually.

It's fine XD
It's something I've wondered for a while myself. |D

a bunch of ladies on television don't have much of a personality, but not i've been seeing pretty much the same amount of annoying guys, too. I think that males are... easier to develop and work with, though? i have no clue why. but that could be the reason that male characters are more interesting than a lot of female ones.
not to mention there are more girls that are all like "HAAAYYY LOOK AT ME <333" than there are boys that do it senselessly... of course it's just as terrible if a male does it. ya just don't see it as often.
blah blah blah this might not make sense i just woke up

I think mostly it's due to poor examples. The portrayal of women in media, be it movies, television, or comics (Books less so) is, granted, usually designed by men. This has one of a few results: Either a: The characters are designed for cheesecake value, either out of the creator's own wishes, or what he thinks will sell and be appealing (examples being most of these chain-mail bikini, legless leotard wedgie superheroines). After this, it doesn't matter whether or not the character has actual depth or good design, girls can just pull the "Tch, no real woman has a body like that. You can OBVIOUSLY tell a MAN made this character up" b: I think a few guys are kind of afraid of the backlash they might get from these people who might say "Oh, pff, he doesn't know how to write women characters, he's just making another male character that happens to be a woman. REAL women characters have traits such as the desire for home stability, more emotional depth then male characters, bla bla bla" so, overcompensating for this, they write their women as over-emotional and flighty attempting to be 'real', which then ironically come off as annoying rather than having 'emotional depth'. ...or just c: They think women ARE emotional and flighty, and that's how they design them (Examples being: Anything written by Gordon Dickson)
Then I think there is kind of the "UH uh, not in MY territory bitch!" issue that goes on once in a while, like "NOOOO, YOU can't get together with HIM, I wanted him to get together with HER you bitch!", in kind of the same flavor where guys might hate these bad-boy "Oh lookit me ah'm so coooooool" characters that are designed to get girls fawning over them (*coughJetfromavatarcoughcough*)
THEN, there's also just a plethora of double-standards in archetypes. Strong, take-no-nonsense men are... ...well, strong, take-no-nonsense, while women with the same attitude instead come off as stubborn and bitchy. (Though I think that in many cases, the creators, attempting to shove on through such divides, some female characters really ARE just stubborn and bitchy, missing the actual points of being 'tough';)
As far as my personal opinions go... I'd like to see less of these female villains who're all about the evil 'female wiles' to get their job done. They just piss me off. I want them to get more with the butt-kicking, hero-stomping, and less with the whole "I'll sleep with you, but then I'll POISON your coffee tomorrow morning." or "OhhHHhh, you wouldn't hit a GIRL, would you?" ...after which they'll turn right around and stab you to death or something.
...and then of course, in some cases, I'm sure it's just that they'd rather look at more guys rather than girls, same way guys probably want to see girls rather than more guys a lot of the time.

its not all female characters... but a lot of female characters can be beyond idiotic, some overly slutty, useless, and some even a total (pardon the language) pain in the ass!!!!!!!

I don't know if this would apply to all female/male opinions, but at least that is my opinion...

Reading over that conversation, the girls you discussed could be put on a continuum of "male chauvinism*"

Yoko and Maka clearly do not yield to the males, where as Tohru and Tamaki tend to act submissive towards males

*male chauvinism: activity indicative of belief in the superiority of men over women

Well yeah, that could be true as well.
It's also up to personal preference. :\
My favorites are usually the strong characters.

There was an interesting study I read about where pictures of men and woman were shown to a wide range of people from different walks of life, cultures and different ages. They were asked to rate the 'attractiveness' or 'beauty' of subject. Where as all the subjects, both males and female, had about an 80% correlation in who was beautiful for females, there was only about a 40-50% correlation for what an attractive male looks like.

In other words, its much easier to draw a "generic" attractive girl then female.

If you add that idea to the belief that many of my female friends have that most woman are at least slightly attracted to other woman, where as men tend to see them as a threat, it starts to make sense why there is always the 'bimbo eyecandy charicter'.

So, if you want to add some sex appeal, then its a far safer bet to draw a female. (80% of people can agree on what is attractive, and females will react more positively to an attractive woman then males will react to an attractive male)

Submissive people are (surprise surprise) less interesting in general. After all, we associate with people based off their actions, not what they don't do.

Seriously, who watches Tenchi-muyo for Tenchi?
